Weather Update: Pune Experiences Temperature Fluctuations, Light Rain Expected From November 13
Pune city has been witnessing significant temperature fluctuations since the beginning of November, with the minimum temperature dropping to 15.2 degrees Celsius. However, a new weather system forming in the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to bring moisture to Maharashtra, leading to light rain in Pune from November 13 onwards.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city’s minimum temperature has been fluctuating, recording 16.7 degrees Celsius on October 25, 15.2 degrees Celsius on November 7, and 15.9 degrees Celsius on November 11. This drop in temperature has given Pune a winter feel, with fog visible in many areas during night and early morning hours.
IMD forecast indicates similar conditions for the next 24 hours, followed by chances of light rainfall in Pune city, leading to a gradual increase in temperature. A yellow alert has been issued for Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, and other districts.
Anupam Kashyapi, former head of IMD Pune’s weather and forecasting division, stated, “The formation of a low-pressure system in the southwest Bay of Bengal will bring moisture to south Maharashtra and Pune from November 13, resulting in partly cloudy skies with light rain.”
Despite the temperature fluctuations, IMD officials clarified that winter has not yet begun in Pune, as the official winter period is from December to February.
The city’s air quality has also become a concern. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has increased significantly, posing health risks to residents. As of November 11, the AQI stood at 154, up from 133 on November 8.
Some areas in Pune have recorded alarming AQI levels. Thergaon, Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk, Gavalinagar, and Wakad are among the most polluted areas, with AQI levels ranging from 241 to 313. Other areas, including Katraj Dairy Chowk, Karve Road, Nigadi, Shivajinagar, and Alandi, have also recorded high AQI levels, above 100.
