Open-top vintage train completes trial runs, butterfly-shaped Krishnagiri station features glass roof and metro-like facilities

The iconic Vanrani toy train at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali, Mumbai, is set to resume operations after a four-year gap. A second vintage toy train, an open-top model allowing tourists to enjoy nature directly, has arrived at the park and completed its trial runs.

The toy train service was closed in 2021 due to damage caused by Cyclone Tauktae. Thanks to consistent follow-up by Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, who represents Mumbai North, the beloved attraction is making a comeback.

The park will now operate two distinct toy trains. The first is a Vistadome coach with a transparent glass roof and large windows, which arrived from Ahmedabad and has already completed trial runs. The second is an open vintage train that allows passengers to experience the natural surroundings more directly.

Both trains will provide fun and exciting experiences, especially for children and nature enthusiasts who have been requesting the service’s return.

New infrastructure for the toy train

A 2.3-kilometer railway track has been prepared for the new Vanarani toy train. The route begins from the 5.5 square kilometer Krishnagiri Park and includes a biodiversity area, a mini zoo, tunnels, and bridges. Fifteen bridges have been constructed along this track.

The Krishnagiri station has been designed in the shape of a butterfly, creating an attractive visual landmark. The station features modern amenities including a glass roof and metro-like facilities for passenger convenience.

Service details and timeline

Trial runs of the trains are currently underway and are expected to be completed within two to three days. Once trials are successfully finished, regular services will begin for tourists and Mumbaikars.

The revival of Vanrani gained momentum after persistent demand from park visitors, nature lovers, and families with children. The long-standing request from these groups is now being fulfilled.

The toy train system has been a major attraction at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, offering visitors a unique way to explore the green areas of Mumbai. The service will provide an opportunity to tour the park’s natural beauty while enjoying a nostalgic ride that appeals to both children and adults.

For Mumbaikars and tourists visiting the city, the return of Vanrani represents the restoration of a beloved experience that has been missed for four years. The combination of modern Vistadome coaches and vintage open-top trains will offer visitors options based on their preferences for experiencing the park’s natural environment.
