What Is A BH Series Number Plate? Who Can Get It And What Are Its Benefits?
The BH (Bharat) Series number plate was introduced to make vehicle ownership easier for people who frequently move between states for work. It eliminates the need for repeated vehicle re-registration and simplifies road tax payments.
People who regularly relocate from one state to another often face difficulties in transferring vehicle registrations and paying road taxes again in the new state. To address this issue, the Central Government introduced the BH (Bharat) Series number plate.

A vehicle registered under the BH Series can be used across India without the need for re-registration when the owner shifts to another state. This makes it especially useful for professionals whose jobs require frequent transfers.
The facility is available only to specific categories of vehicle owners. Eligible individuals include Central and State Government employees, defence personnel, employees of public sector undertakings (PSUs), government banks, and private-sector employees working for companies that have offices in at least four states or Union Territories.
The BH Series is meant only for private vehicles such as cars and two-wheelers. Commercial vehicles, including taxis and buses, are not eligible for this registration.
One of the biggest advantages of the BH Series is its road tax structure. Unlike regular vehicle registrations, where road tax is usually paid upfront for a long period, BH Series vehicle owners can pay road tax in instalments every two years. This reduces the initial financial burden when purchasing a vehicle. Diesel vehicles attract an additional tax component, while electric vehicles receive concessions under the applicable rules.
A BH Series registration follows a unique format. For example, in a registration number such as “26 BH 1234 AB”, the first two digits represent the year of registration, followed by the letters “BH”, while the remaining numbers and letters are generated automatically through the vehicle registration system. Owners cannot select a preferred or fancy number under this series.
Applicants can request a BH Series registration while purchasing a new vehicle. Government employees must provide their official identity card, while eligible private-sector employees are required to submit the prescribed employment certificate issued by their company. After online verification of documents and payment of applicable taxes, the registration is processed through the government’s vehicle registration portal.
Documents generally required for BH Series registration include a PAN card, Aadhaar card, official identity proof and employment-related certification from the employer.
The BH Series has emerged as a convenient option for professionals who frequently relocate across India, offering seamless interstate mobility, simplified paperwork and greater flexibility in vehicle ownership.
