“When Relaxing Holidays Turn Stressful, What’s the Point?” – Doctor’s Viral Post Sparks Debate

A medical professional has ignited a conversation on social media about how vacations have become more of a checklist than a chance to unwind. Dr. Sunita Sayammagaru, in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), shared her thoughts on how people today treat holidays as tasks to complete rather than opportunities to relax — a sentiment that quickly resonated with thousands online.

“When holidays meant for relaxation become stressful, what’s the point of going at all?” she questioned in her post, which has since garnered over 163,000 views and hundreds of reactions.

Dr. Sayammagaru explained that in the race to “see it all,” many travellers end up rushing from one destination to another, returning home more tired than when they left. She contrasted this with her own family’s travel style — a slower, more mindful approach focused on enjoying fewer places deeply.

“We visit one place, maybe a nearby one too, and explore at leisure. We know we can’t see everything — and that’s fine. What matters is enjoying the moment,” she wrote.

She added that she often notices others on vacation “in a rush to tick every spot off their list,” leaving little room to actually appreciate the experience.

Social Media Weighs In
The post sparked wide-ranging discussions online. Many agreed with her, blaming social media for creating a “performative travel culture.”

“They just want pictures for Instagram and Facebook. Their happiness now comes from likes, not from the actual experience,” one user commented.

Others, however, offered a different perspective, pointing out that limited time and money often drive such behaviour.

“Not everyone can afford multiple trips,” one person wrote. “If you finally get a Europe visa, you try to see as much as you can. It’s practical.”

Another user added, “People plan tightly because of budgets and time constraints. It’s not always about showing off.”

While opinions varied, Dr. Sayammagaru’s post struck a chord with many, reminding travellers to pause, slow down, and rediscover the true essence of a holiday — rest, reflection, and joy.
