India, home to more than 140 crore people, shows remarkable diversity not only in culture and lifestyle but also in the health and longevity of its citizens. Life expectancy—the average number of years people live—varies noticeably across different states, shaped by factors like healthcare quality, education, nutrition, and living conditions.

A recent release by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its Handbook of Statistics on Indian States has shed fresh light on which regions of the country are leading when it comes to long and healthy lives.

According to this report, Kerala stands at the top, recording the highest life expectancy in India. People in Kerala live an average of 75.1 years, a number significantly above the national average. Breaking it down further, Kerala’s women enjoy a remarkable average life expectancy of 79.9 years, while men in the state live around 72.2 years.

Kerala’s strong performance in this area is often linked to its well-established public healthcare system, high literacy rates, and decades of focus on preventive medicine and community health. With accessible hospitals even in remote areas and a population that prioritizes health awareness, Kerala has set a benchmark for the rest of the country.

Following closely behind is Jammu & Kashmir, which takes the second spot on the list. The average life expectancy here is 73.5 years, making it one of India’s most improved regions in terms of health indicators.

Women in Jammu & Kashmir live an average of 76.2 years, while men live approximately 71.6 years. Despite the Union Territory’s challenging geography and climate, its progress in healthcare accessibility, immunization programs, and maternal care has contributed significantly to this achievement.

The variation in life expectancy across states highlights the importance of consistent investment in healthcare, education, and social welfare. While Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir show what long-term planning and people-centric policies can accomplish, other states still have significant room to grow. Improving nutrition, increasing awareness about preventive care, and strengthening public health systems can help bridge this gap.
