Pune: Teaching and non-teaching staff from primary and secondary schools across Maharashtra have declared a statewide shutdown on December 5, calling for complete closure of schools and a large-scale march to district collector offices. The strike, announced on Friday by various teachers’ organisations, aims to push the government to address several unresolved service-related issues.

According to the circular shared by the unions, teachers in Pune will gather at the new Zilla Parishad building and proceed in a protest march to the district collector’s office, where a public meeting has also been planned.

The main demands include withdrawal of the decision to make the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) compulsory for educators appointed before 2013, cancellation of the Government Resolution issued on March 15, 2024 regarding revised staff pattern approvals, and restoration of earlier staffing norms. Teachers are also seeking the removal of the ‘Shikshan Sevak’ contractual system, implementation of full regular pay scales for all teaching staff, and an end to online and non-academic duties assigned to them.

The State Headmasters’ Association stated that these issues have been pending for several years. “The government has continuously overlooked teachers’ concerns. If this neglect continues, we will escalate our protest. On December 5, we urge all teaching and non-teaching personnel to participate in the statewide shutdown and join the march in large numbers,” he said.
