A case of cheating by personation and sexual harassment has been registered recently by the Mumbai crime branch’s south cyber police. This move comes after an unknown person allegedly created a fake Facebook account and made obscene remarks against the wife and daughter of a prominent politician from Maharashtra. The incident took place on July 16 around 10.14 am when she was at home.

It came to light when one of the ruling party’s social media coordinators from the state came across the post and reported it to the authorities. Soon, the case was registered.

A 56-year-old woman, who has been a member of the party for a long time, mentioned that she received a message on a social media platform defaming the family members of the senior party leader. The complainant claimed she immediately suspected that the account named by Pokale Manesh was fake. However, it was operated by a person named Pokale Manoj. The posts contained derogatory remarks against the wife and daughter of a senior politician, she added.

According to police, the victim further exclaimed that the accused misused social media to impersonate and defame the wife and daughter of a prominent politician in Maharashtra.

The crime branch officials said that they are scrutinizing the IP addresses used to create the account and are trying to identify and trace the suspect.

The case has been registered under section 75 (3) (sexual harassment), 79 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 319 (2) (cheating by personation) of the BNS, and sections 66 (C) and 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
