Woman survives after five heart attacks in 16 months ; Read to know more

A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to the heart is significantly reduced or completely blocked, usually due to the buildup of fat, cholesterol, and other substances in the coronary arteries. Unfortunately, many heart attack sufferers do not receive prompt treatment and may not survive.

However, an incident has come to light wherein woman who endured and survived five heart attacks. Despite facing this challenging ordeal, the 51-year-old resident of Mulund persevered through five heart attacks over the past 16 months.

Previously referred to as Rekha, she received heart attack in train from Jaipur to Borivali in September 2022 and was promptly taken to a private hospital in Ahmedabad by railway officials. She has undergone a total of six angioplasty procedures, received five stents, and had one cardiac bypass surgery.

Concerned about her health, she simply wants to understand her condition and whether she is at risk of developing new blockages within the next three months. Experts believe that an autoimmune disease such as vasculitis could be the underlying cause, where the blood vessels become inflamed and narrowed. However, the trial results have not provided a clear diagnosis thus far.

Rekha stated, “We decided to go to Mumbai for angioplasty.” Hasmukh Rawat, Rekha’s cardiologist since July, expressed, “The cause of Rekha’s heart problems has become a mystery.” Two angioplasty and bypass surgeries have been done on Rekha. She further told “I have experienced heart attacks in February, May, July, and November”. Rekha also suffers from other persistent conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity.

As of September, of the previous year, her weight stood at 107 kg, but she has managed to shed over 30 kg since then. Dr. Rawat explained that it is not uncommon for patients to experience recurring blockages in the same location, but in Rekha’s case, new blockages have emerged in different areas.
