Yograj Singh Stirs Controversy, Calls Arjun Tendulkar ‘Koyla’; Compares Him to Coal
Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh, known for his controversial remarks, has sparked yet another debate, this time involving cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar’s son, Arjun Tendulkar. In a recent interview, Yograj made a bold analogy, comparing Arjun to “koyla” (coal), which has ignited discussions within the cricket community. Yograj, who has previously been vocal in criticizing MS Dhoni for his son Yuvraj Singh’s career trajectory, didn’t hold back his opinion about Arjun either.
Speaking about Arjun’s cricketing potential, Yograj remarked, “Aapne heera dekha hai koyle ki khan mein? Wo koyla hi hai”, implying that Arjun is like coal in a mine, yet to transform into a valuable diamond. The comments have been polarizing, with critics labeling them as unnecessarily harsh, while others view them as the honest words of an experienced coach.
Elaborating on his statement, Yograj added, “Nikalo to patthar hi hai, kisi tarashgir ke haath mein dalo to chamak ke Kohinoor ban jata hai,”—suggesting that with the right guidance, Arjun could shine like the Kohinoor diamond. He emphasized that potential, if not nurtured, could be wasted: “If that same diamond reaches someone who doesn’t know its value, they destroy it.”
Yograj cited his own experience in shaping Yuvraj Singh’s career, sharing, “Yuvraj says there is magic in my hands; I made him what he is today.” He also reflected on the criticisms he once faced as a father and coach, recalling how his harsh training methods earned him the nickname ‘Hitler’ within his family.
This isn’t the first time Yograj Singh’s comments have raised eyebrows. He has repeatedly criticized former Indian captain MS Dhoni, blaming him for Yuvraj Singh’s limited opportunities in international cricket. In a recent twist to this family drama, a video of Yuvraj Singh surfaced where he expressed concerns about his father’s behavior. In a candid podcast, Yuvraj said, “I think my father has mental issues and he just doesn’t want to accept it.”
Yuvraj, celebrated for his iconic performances in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, hinted at his frustration with his father’s public comments. He shared his discomfort, stating that these frequent outbursts from Yograj have been a source of embarrassment.
Yograj’s remarks about Arjun Tendulkar have now added fuel to the ongoing discussions about parental influence in shaping sports careers. Arjun, still in the early stages of his cricketing journey, has often faced intense scrutiny due to his father’s legendary status. Fans and experts alike will be watching closely to see how Arjun develops amid these heightened expectations and external pressures.
As the debate rages on, many within the cricketing world are divided—some defend Yograj’s no-nonsense coaching style, while others criticize his choice of words, calling them demotivating for a young talent like Arjun Tendulkar.
