Pune, July 9, 2025: A potential ₹55 crore scam in Pune Municipal Corporation’s waste transport operations has come to light after Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram rejected a massive proposal for vehicle repairs. The decision followed his surprise visit to the Warje area, where he witnessed piles of garbage and unswept roads—raising serious concerns about corruption and absenteeism in the city’s cleanliness system.

The commissioner’s unannounced inspection revealed widespread negligence. Streets were littered with garbage, and cleaning activities were nearly absent. Upon calling senior officials on the spot, the civic chief triggered a frantic clean-up as workers scrambled to cover up the lapse. It was also found that more than 40% of sweepers were missing from duty, with several reportedly drawing salaries while outsourcing their jobs to others.

Amid these glaring lapses, a proposal worth ₹55 crore—meant for repair and maintenance of 80 garbage transport vehicles—was under scrutiny. Commissioner Ram outright rejected the request, suspecting financial irregularities.

“PMC is spending huge sums on cleanliness, but the results on ground are dismal. Many employees are paid without showing up. We’ll tighten controls and crack down on such practices,” he said.

The commissioner has now launched a renewed cleanliness mission and promised stricter monitoring of civic operations going forward.
