42 Black Spots In Pune Identified For Urgent Safety Measures: Collector Jitendra Dudi
Pune, June 23: In light of the increasing number of road accident fatalities, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi has directed officials to implement necessary road safety measures across Pune district and to raise widespread public awareness about accident-prone locations (black spots).
He was speaking at a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee held at the Collector’s Office. Present at the meeting were officials from the Public Works Department including Superintendent Engineer Bappa Bahir and Executive Engineer Milind Barbhaai, Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad, and representatives from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Pune Police, RTO, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
Dudi stated that a total of 42 black spots have been identified in Pune district: 15 within PMC limits, 22 under NHAI, 2 under MSRDC, 1 under the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation, and 2 under the Public Works Department. Both short-term and long-term safety measures should be implemented at these locations. These include restricting access during certain hours, placing warning signs, clearing debris, and installing barricades. The police and transport departments have been instructed to inspect these measures and submit a report within a month.
He further instructed officials to analyze the causes of accidents that occurred over the past year and accordingly suggest preventive measures. All departments must comply with these instructions so the findings can benefit other areas of the district. To ease traffic congestion at Khadakwasla Dam Chowk, he suggested deploying traffic police. Funds will be allocated for public awareness campaigns on road safety, he added.
During the meeting, Bahir also presented an overview of the work done under the District Road Safety Committee using a computer-based presentation.
