5-yr-old Punjab boy becomes youngest Asian to scale Mt Kilimanjaro
Teghbir attributed his success to his coach Bikramjit Singh Ghuman (retired handball coach) and his family.
Marking a significant achievement, a five-year-old scaled Mt Kilimanjaro, highest peak in the African continent and located in Tanzania, at a staggering height of more than 19,340 ft (5,895 m).
Hailing from Ropar, Punjab Teghbir started the Trek to Mount Kilimanjaro on August 18 and walked all along to reach the Uhuru peak, highest point of the mountain, on August 23. “I knew where I was to reach and finally on reaching there I had a picture with my father. I was told to chant ‘Wahe Guru’ when it got difficult on the way. It gave me strength and I was able to reach the summit,” said Teghbir.

With this feat, he equaled the world record of summiting Mt Kilimanjaro at age 5 held by Serbia’s Ognjen Živkovic (on August 6, 2023). Teghbir attributed his success to his coach Bikramjit Singh Ghuman (retired handball coach) and his family.
The trek needs preparation to tackle altitude sickness. Yet the boy managed to conquer all challenges and fulfilled his dream of reaching the summit, where the temperature was minus 10 degrees Celsius.
His father Sukhinderdeep Singh, who accompanied him, said, “Teghbir started preparing for this feat almost a year back. He was trained by Bikramjit, who used to help him with the exercises related to increasing cardiovascular health and lung capacity to deal with altitude sickness.”
He further added, “Each day, he walked around 8-10 km and temperatures dropped with every ascent he made. He walked and stayed at a low oxygen altitude in minus temperature for almost a week.”
Congratulating Teghbir on his achievement, Punjab Police chief Gaurav Yadav posted on X: “Teghbir’s determination and resilience are an inspiration to us all. May his achievements motivate others to push beyond their limits and strive for greatness.”
Kudos to Teghbir Singh (5 years) from Ropar in Punjab on becoming the youngest ever from Asia to scale the 5,895-metre Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa located in Tanzania.
