77-Year-Old Dies After Falling from Escalator at Pune Station; Bystanders Watch, Offer No Help
A 77-year-old man tragically lost his life after falling from an escalator at Pune Railway Station, raising urgent questions about the safety and accessibility of public infrastructure for senior citizens.
The victim, identified as Ashok Prabhakar Deshpande, was on his way to Nagpur with his family. As they prepared to board the train, Deshpande, who was carrying luggage and walking slightly ahead of his wife, daughter, and grandchildren, lost his balance while stepping onto a moving escalator. He fell and sustained critical injuries. Disturbingly, eyewitnesses report that no immediate help was offered as he lay injured on the escalator steps.
Recounting the traumatic experience, his wife Sandhya Deshpande said, “I screamed and shouted for help my voice echoed through the station but no one from the railway staff or police came forward. It was only after a significant delay that two strangers and eventually two railway policemen responded.”
Deshpande was initially admitted to Sassoon General Hospital in critical condition and was later shifted to a private hospital for specialized care. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries after nine days.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and criticism over the apparent lack of emergency response and infrastructure support for elderly passengers. Advocacy groups and members of the public are now calling for urgent reforms, including improved accessibility features, trained staff, and quicker emergency response mechanisms at railway stations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
