Pune: Female PMPML Bus Conductor Attempts Self-Immolation Over Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Senior Official
PUNE – A female bus conductor working with Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) attempted self-immolation at the transport body’s Swargate office on Tuesday, alleging repeated sexual harassment by a senior official. The incident has raised serious concerns about workplace safety for women in Pune’s public transport sector.
A police complaint has been registered at Bundgarden Police Station against PMPML’s Deputy Chief Manager, Sanjay Rajaram Kushalkar, on February 20.
Allegations of Harassment and Workplace Discrimination
According to the victim’s complaint, she was deliberately prevented from performing her duties on the Pune Station route despite being assigned to it. She further claimed that on February 5, 2024, while operating a bus, a technical issue led to the air conditioning system shutting down. Despite her efforts to resolve the issue, officials allegedly obstructed her from continuing her duty instead of providing assistance.
The conductor also alleged continuous workplace harassment, including arbitrary route assignments and mental pressure, which severely impacted her well-being.
Authorities Yet to Take Action
The victim stated that she had submitted multiple complaints to the police and government officials regarding the harassment but received no response. Frustrated with the inaction, she resorted to the extreme step of attempting self-immolation at the PMPML office.
The incident has sparked debates on the safety and treatment of women employees in Pune’s transport system, with calls for stringent action against workplace harassment.
