Pune News: Casteist Slurs In Hinjawadi Society WhatsApp Group Spark Atrocities Act Case
Pune, July 2, 2025 – A case has been registered under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 in Hinjawadi following allegations of casteist remarks made on a housing society’s WhatsApp group.
The incident occurred at the ITrend Homes Housing Society in Phase 2, Hinjawadi, on Tuesday. Ramesh Ahire (37), a resident of the society, lodged a formal complaint with the Hinjawadi Police against fellow resident Saurav Suman (38).
According to the police, both individuals are members of the ITrend Owners WhatsApp group. An argument broke out between them late Tuesday night, escalating quickly and playing out in the group chat.
During the exchange, Suman allegedly made derogatory caste-related remarks aimed at Ahire, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste community. The comments were perceived as insulting and deeply offensive by the complainant.
In addition to the slurs, Suman also allegedly issued a threat to Ahire, stating, “I’ll come to your house and settle this.”
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Atrocities Act and are currently investigating the matter further.
