Maharashtra's Samruddhi Samruddhi Mahamarg Launches 5 MW Solar Power Project
Mumbai, September 23, 2025 – The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has taken a major step in sustainable infrastructure with the launch of a 5-megawatt (MW) solar power project along the Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Highway.
The solar energy initiative was inaugurated at two key interchanges: 3 MW at Karanja Lad in Buldhana district and 2 MW at Mehkar in Washim district. This makes the Samruddhi Highway the first highway in India to integrate renewable energy generation alongside high-speed travel infrastructure.

The 701 km-long Samruddhi Highway, connecting Nagpur and Mumbai, has already seen over 25 million vehicles traverse its route since its inception. From the outset, MSRDC planned for both fast travel and sustainable energy production. In the first phase, the highway has a total installed solar capacity of 9 MW, with plans to implement 204 MW across other interchanges in the coming years.

Revenue from the solar power project will supplement the highway’s income, with electricity sales managed through MahaVitaran under a 2022 agreement with MSRDC’s special-purpose vehicle, Mahasamruddhi Renewable Energy Ltd. The project also positions MSRDC to earn carbon credits, supporting future infrastructure financing.
Manuj Jindal, Co-Managing Director of MSRDC, stated, “This is a significant milestone for the corporation. Beyond the Samruddhi Highway, similar solar projects are being planned at interchanges of other proposed expressways, creating additional revenue and promoting sustainable infrastructure.”
