In a move aimed at promoting digital transactions and reducing cash payments at toll plazas, the Government of India has announced a new rule for vehicles without a valid FASTag.

Starting November 15, 2025, vehicles entering National Highway toll plazas without a valid or functional FASTag will be charged 1.25 times the regular toll if they choose to pay using UPI. However, if they pay in cash, they will continue to be charged double the toll amount.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said this amendment to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 is a step toward encouraging digital payments, improving transparency in toll collection, and enhancing the overall user experience on highways.
