A tragic accident on the old Mumbai–Pune Highway claimed the life of a 20-year-old biker from Worli early Sunday morning. The victim, identified as Kushal Manoj Sonkar, lost control of his motorcycle near Warvai village in Panvel while trying to avoid a stray dog that suddenly ran across the road.
According to police reports, Kushal, a resident of Gopalnagar in Worli, was on a weekend ride to Lonavala with six friends—five from Worli and two from Dombivli. Riding a Triumph Speed 400 Motorcycle, the group had gathered at Kalamboli before heading toward their destination.
Around 7 a.m., the incident occurred when a dog darted into the road. In an attempt to avoid hitting it, Kushal braked suddenly, causing his high-powered bike to skid and crash along the roadside. “His cousin, who was riding just behind him, said Kushal tried to regain control, but the bike veered sharply before impact,” said an investigating officer.
Kushal sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by his friends, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The Panvel Taluka Police have registered an accidental death report and stated that there was no collision with another vehicle. Preliminary investigations suggest the accident resulted from an abrupt braking maneuver while avoiding the stray dog.
Police have registered the case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including Sections 281 (rash driving), 106(1) (death by negligence), 125(b) (act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 324(4) (mischief), as well as Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act for dangerous driving.
Expressing concern over the rising number of such incidents, a senior officer from the Panvel Taluka Police stated, “This is an unfortunate reminder that sudden braking at high speeds can be deadly. Riders must maintain caution, especially on highways known for animal crossings.
