Tragic Incident in Kalyan: College Student Ends Life After Altercation Over Language on Local Train
Kalyan witnessed a heartbreaking incident recently, where a young college student allegedly took his own life following a dispute over language on a local train. The incident occurred in the Tisgaon Naka area of Kalyan East, and it has sent shockwaves through the local community.
The deceased, Arnav Khaire, a college-going youth, reportedly faced a brutal attack from four to five individuals while commuting to his college in Mulund. According to reports, the altercation began when Arnav accidentally bumped into another passenger on the train, which escalated into an argument over speaking Hindi versus Marathi.
Arnav’s father, Jitendra Khaire, has provided details of the tragic sequence of events. He stated that on the day of the incident, Arnav left for college as usual. Since his first-class train pass had expired, he purchased a second-class ticket and boarded a local train from Kalyan. During the journey, he found himself pressed against a Hindi-speaking passenger due to the crowd. Arnav politely told the person in Hindi to adjust slightly as he was feeling squeezed.
According to his father, some other passengers overheard this and confronted Arnav, insisting he speak in Marathi. When Arnav identified himself as Marathi, they allegedly taunted him, asking if he felt ashamed to speak his own language, and physically assaulted him. Jitendra emphasized that Arnav had not tried to provoke anyone and had never been taught to engage in such conflicts.
After the attack, Arnav, reportedly distressed and mentally strained, went home and ended his life by hanging. Before the incident, he had messaged his father saying he was feeling unwell and was walking home from college. Later, he called to inform that he had reached Kalyan station safely and then finally reached home. Around ten to fifteen minutes later, he contacted his father again to explain what had happened on the train.
Jitendra Khaire has demanded that the individuals responsible for harassing his son and pushing him to such a tragic step be identified and punished. He expressed his anguish, stating that no other child should have to face a similar ordeal.
The Kolsewadi police have registered a complaint and are currently investigating the matter. This incident highlights the urgent need for awareness about mental health, sensitivity in public spaces, and the consequences of bullying and harassment.
