Pani-Puri Fans Beware! UP Woman’s Jaw Dislocates While Eating Golgappa; Doctors Left Helpless as Mouth Remains Open | VIDEO
Doctors say sudden wide mouth opening can trigger this painful condition, especially with oversized bites
A light-hearted family moment in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya turned into a frightening medical emergency on Sunday night when a woman suffered a sudden jaw dislocation while eating a golgappa. The incident has sparked widespread discussion locally, as the woman had to be taken from one hospital to another after initial treatment attempts failed.
Inkala Devi, a resident of Gaurikishanpur near Kakore, was with her family outside a hospital where her niece-in-law was due for delivery. Like many others gathered there, she decided to snack on golgappas. But when she opened her mouth wide to take a bite, her jaw reportedly locked open and refused to close. Her sister-in-law later recounted that the family initially assumed it was ordinary pain, but panic followed when Inkala Devi was unable to shut her mouth at all.
She was rushed immediately to a nearby medical centre, where doctors attempted manual reduction of the jaw. Despite multiple efforts, the dislocation could not be corrected and the team referred her to a higher medical facility for specialised intervention. She was later shifted to a Medical College Hospital, where doctors finally managed to reset her jaw.
Family members said she continues to experience pain and has not fully regained comfortable jaw movement, prompting further monitoring and care.
Doctors explained that such cases, though unusual, are medically recognised. Sudden and excessive mouth opening—especially while trying to consume an oversized food item in one bite—can put stress on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), causing it to slip out of place. Individuals with weak jaw joints, previous injuries, or underlying joint conditions may be more prone to this. Stress on the joint while laughing, yawning, or biting into something large can also trigger similar episodes.
Locals in Auraiya said the incident has become a major talking point, with many expressing surprise at how a routine snack could lead to such a severe problem. Medical experts emphasised that while golgappas themselves are not the problem, attempting to fit an entire large piece into the mouth at once can strain the jaw beyond its natural movement.
Doctors recommend being mindful of jaw movements, avoiding overly wide mouth opening, and seeking immediate professional help if such a situation arises. Quick treatment helps prevent prolonged pain, muscle strain, and repeated dislocation in the future.
Inkala Devi continues to recover, and her medical team has advised rest, soft foods, and restricted jaw movement until the joint heals fully.
