Pune-Mumbai Missing Link: Will There Be a Toll? Eknath Shinde Makes Major Announcement
Mumbai Pune Missing Link project to open on May 1 with no toll hike. Travel time to reduce by 20–30 minutes; 99% work completed, says Eknath Shinde.
Pune/Mumbai, April 26, 2026:
The much-anticipated Mumbai–Pune Missing Link project is set to open on May 1, with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announcing that there will be no toll hike despite the major infrastructure upgrade. The project, aimed at making travel faster, safer, and seamless, is expected to significantly boost connectivity between Mumbai and Pune.
Shinde expressed confidence that the project will accelerate Maharashtra’s development, noting that 99% of the work has been completed. The inauguration will be carried out by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
During a site visit, Shinde reviewed the progress and quality of construction. “I personally inspected the project, and the work has been carried out satisfactorily. Minor pending works will be completed in the next few days. Officials have been instructed to ensure timely completion with high standards,” he said.
Engineering Marvel with Tunnels and High Bridge
The 10.5-kilometre-long Missing Link project includes two massive tunnels, a high viaduct, and a cable-stayed bridge rising about 182 metres above Tiger Valley. One of the tunnels, approximately 23.75 metres wide, is among the widest in the world.
Constructed under challenging conditions including heavy rainfall, strong winds of up to 70 kmph, and difficult terrain, the road also passes 182 metres below Lonavala Lake. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) successfully executed the project despite these engineering challenges.
Ghats to Be Fully Bypassed, Travel Time to Drop
Once operational, the Missing Link will bypass the dangerous ghat section entirely, reducing travel time by 20 to 30 minutes. Shinde stated that accidents in the ghat stretch are expected to drop drastically, potentially nearing zero.
The project will also lead to fuel savings, reduced pollution, and smoother, signal-free travel, further enhancing commuter convenience.
No Toll Increase, Priority for Light Vehicles
Addressing concerns about toll charges, Shinde clarified that there will be no increase in toll rates due to the Missing Link project. “There is no proposal to hike toll at Khalapur toll plaza either,” he said.
In the initial phase, priority will be given to light vehicles and buses, which is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the ghat section.
Project Cost and Economic Impact
The project, estimated at ₹6,700 crore, received approval in 2019 when Devendra Fadnavis was Chief Minister. Its inauguration under his leadership marks a notable milestone.
The Mumbai–Pune Expressway, India’s first access-controlled highway, has already contributed to growth in IT, services, industry, and real estate sectors. With the Missing Link, the expressway’s efficiency is expected to improve further, strengthening regional economic development.
