Watch: Virat Kohli Sends Strong Message On ODI Future and Repeated Scrutiny
Virat Kohli has made it clear that he does not want to continue in an environment where he constantly has to prove his value. Speaking openly about his ODI future and the 2027 World Cup, the former India captain said clarity and trust from team management are more important than repeated scrutiny.
Virat Kohli has sparked fresh debate over his ODI future after making strong remarks about selection clarity, trust and his possible participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s podcast, Kohli said he is still passionate about playing cricket and remains interested in representing India at the 2027 World Cup. However, he added that he would continue only if there is honesty and clarity from the management and selectors.

“Either tell me on day one that I am not good enough or I am not needed. But if I am made to feel like I need to constantly prove my worth and value, then I am not in that space,” Kohli said.
The 37-year-old, who retired from T20 Internationals in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025, now plays only ODI cricket for India. With fewer ODI matches being played globally, speculation around the future of senior players like Kohli and Rohit Sharma has increased in recent months.
Kohli admitted that after playing for so many years, he once questioned whether he still had the motivation to continue. However, he said his mindset changed when he stopped thinking about proving himself to others and started focusing purely on his love for the game.
“I want to play because I love the game. I just loved batting. I felt like a child again. This is not about anyone, this is about me and the game,” he said.
The former India captain also expressed frustration over uncertainty around role clarity and selection. According to him, repeated questioning of a player’s methods after showing faith in them creates inconsistency and unnecessary pressure.
“The moment people start complicating things for me, either be clear and honest or be quiet and let me play,” Kohli said.
Kohli also highlighted his fitness and preparation standards, saying he continues to work hard daily and remains fully committed to the demands of international cricket. He said he is physically prepared to field for long hours and maintain the intensity required at the highest level.
The star batter recently returned to domestic cricket during the Vijay Hazare Trophy after nearly two decades. Playing for Delhi, he scored a century and became the fastest batter to complete 16,000 List A runs. Kohli described the experience as refreshing and said he played with complete freedom and enjoyment.
Reports suggest the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still evaluating long-term plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Kohli’s latest comments are being viewed as a clear indication that he wants complete trust and a defined role if he is to continue till the tournament.
Despite the ongoing debate, Kohli made it clear that his desire to play cricket remains strong. “Playing a World Cup for India is amazing,” he said, while adding that mutual clarity between player and management is essential moving forward.
