Pune, July 7, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a holiday until Sunday for 101 municipal schools across the city after the campuses were converted into temporary shelters for Warkaris displaced by flooding in Alandi and Dehu.

While heavy rainfall has affected Pune over the past few days, the decision to keep these schools closed is primarily linked to the ongoing Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage and the flood situation in the twin pilgrimage towns.

Thousands of Warkaris travelling with the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhis were stranded after severe flooding inundated parts of Alandi and Dehu. To provide immediate relief, the Pune civic administration converted more than 100 municipal schools into temporary accommodation centres for the pilgrims.

The schools are being used to provide shelter, food and medical assistance to the displaced Warkaris. To ensure uninterrupted relief operations and adequate accommodation for the pilgrims, the administration has declared a holiday for students of these 101 schools until Sunday.

Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Pune district on July 6, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. In view of the weather conditions, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi had also declared a holiday on Monday for all anganwadis, primary, secondary and higher secondary schools across Pune city and district, prioritising the safety of students.
