A New Look For Wanowrie: Sanvidhan Chowk's Makeover Highlights Constitution & Culture
Sanvidhan Chowk in Wanowrie — an area known for its deep connection to history, heritage and the spirit of the Indian Constitution — has undergone a significant redevelopment, giving residents a renewed sense of pride. Home to the revered Madhai Shinde Chhatri, its proximity to key military establishments, and a symbolic replica of the Indian Constitution, Wanowrie has long stood as a reminder of India’s legacy and democratic values.
Recognising the need for major improvements at Sanvidhan Chowk, former Pune mayor and corporator Prashant Jagtap had taken up the challenge several years ago. The work has now reached successful completion, transforming the prominent junction into a cleaner, safer and more aesthetically appealing space.
The redevelopment includes the renewal and widening of footpaths, ensuring smoother pedestrian movement. A 45-metre Indian national flag mast has been installed, adding a striking and patriotic presence to the Chowk. Additionally, the area has seen extensive concretisation, upgraded footpaths, and the enhancement of the Constitution memorial, reinforcing its symbolic importance.
To address long-standing monsoon-related issues, the project has introduced large-diameter stormwater and drainage lines, improving water flow and reducing flooding risks. For better traffic management, the earlier triangular section of the Chowk — which often caused confusion and bottlenecks — has been reduced in size and fitted with steel grills, helping streamline vehicular movement.
Work on the Samrat Ashok Stambh, another culturally significant addition, is currently in progress. Once completed, the structure is expected to further enrich the identity of Sanvidhan Chowk as a landmark celebrating India’s constitutional and civilisational ethos.
With these upgrades, Sanvidhan Chowk is set to become not just a functional junction but a symbol of civic pride, historical reverence and community development for Wanowrie.
