Digital Aadhaar moves a step closer to replacing the physical card as UIDAI unlocks major features for users

The full version of the Aadhaar app is being launched on January 28, bringing a major shift in how citizens manage their digital identity. With this update, Aadhaar users will no longer need to carry a physical card or photocopies for most purposes. The app is set to become a complete digital identity card that can be accessed anytime from a smartphone.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that several locked features of the Aadhaar app are now being unlocked, making it far more powerful and practical. The biggest convenience is that users can now update their registered mobile number and home address directly from their phone, without visiting an Aadhaar centre.

Once installed, users have to log in using the mobile number linked with their Aadhaar. An OTP-based verification process secures access to the app. After logging in, users can make changes to their personal details by following the step-by-step process provided within the application.

One of the most important upgrades is the ability to change your registered address from home. For this, users must upload valid supporting documents for the new address. After verification, the updated details will reflect in the Aadhaar database and within the app itself. This feature is expected to save time, reduce crowding at Aadhaar centres, and simplify document correction for millions of users.

Similarly, users can now update their registered mobile number from home. This is especially helpful for people who have changed numbers and faced issues accessing OTP-based services. Earlier, such updates required a physical visit to an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

The Aadhaar app is now positioned as a complete digital identity card. It can be used to verify identity at hotels, offices, guest houses, airports, concerts, and other places where Aadhaar is required. Showing the Aadhaar digitally through the app eliminates the need to carry the physical card, reducing the risk of loss or misuse.

UIDAI has indicated that more features may be added in future updates. These could include options to update name and email ID directly through the app, making Aadhaar management even more flexible and user-friendly.

With this launch, the concept of Aadhaar as a “paperless identity” becomes more practical than ever. Citizens can now manage, verify, and present their Aadhaar digitally using just their smartphones. The move is also expected to strengthen data security by reducing dependence on physical copies that can be misplaced or misused.

The Aadhaar app combines convenience with security through OTP-based authentication and controlled access. Users are advised to protect their phones with screen locks and avoid sharing OTPs with anyone to ensure safety of their personal data.

As India moves deeper into digital governance, this update marks a significant milestone. The Aadhaar app is no longer just a viewer for Aadhaar details but a full-fledged digital identity management platform.
