Advocate Rakesh Kishore — the lawyer who had hurled a shoe toward former Chief Justice of India B R Gavai in the Supreme Court — was allegedly assaulted at Karkardooma Court in Delhi on Tuesday. A video of the incident has since gone viral.

Kishore said that a group of unidentified men confronted him and one of them hit him with slippers. According to him, the attackers claimed they were “punishing” him for throwing a shoe at the CJI. He also said the men accused him of targeting Gavai because he is a Dalit, and added that both sides exchanged slogans during the scuffle.

He clarified that he did not suffer injuries and chose not to file a police complaint. Calling it a “family matter,” he said there was no point in complaining against fellow lawyers.

Another lawyer from Karkardooma courts said he came to know about the clash after stepping out of a hearing, and was informed that Kishore had been involved in a verbal and physical argument with some advocates.

Background: Shoe-Hurling Incident at Supreme Court

The original incident occurred on October 6 during mentioning hours in Court No. 1, when Kishore, who is 71, threw a shoe toward then Chief Justice Gavai as he sat with Justice Chandrachud. Security personnel quickly removed him from the courtroom. Although Kishore was briefly detained, the CJI instructed officials not to press charges and continued hearing the matter without disruption.

Gavai later said that the shoe had not reached him and he only heard a sound, remaining focused on the proceedings. The lawyer was released the same day.
