Pune: The festival of Chhoti Diwali is celebrated a day before Diwali. The reason for celebrating a small Diwali before Diwali is that Hanuman Jayanti is also celebrated on this day and on this day Lord Shri Krishna had killed the demon named Narakasura. Therefore, it is also known as Narak Chaturdashi. On the day of Chhoti Diwali, 5 to 7 lamps are lit. On this day, Saundarya Vrat is also observed in many parts of India. Why is Chhoti Diwali called Narak Chaturdashi?
According to several beliefs, on this day Lord Shri Krishna killed the demon named Narakasura. Narakasura had kept more than 16 thousand women in his captivity. Whom Lord Shri Krishna had liberated. From the same day Chhoti Diwali is also celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi.
On the day of Narak Chaturdashi, a flour lamp is lit for Yamraj. This lamp is lit in the south direction. Besides this, this lamp is also dedicated to the ancestors. It is believed that by lighting a lamp in the south direction, a person also receives blessings from his ancestors. Besides, this lamp in the name of Yama also protects the person from untimely death. On the day of Chhoti Diwali, light at least 5 or 7 lamps in your house, out of which keep one lamp on the doorstep of the house in the south direction.
Exact Date & Time of Chhoti Diwali 2023
This year, Chhoti Diwali will be celebrated on November 11, on the day of Narak Chaturdashi. This time Chaturdashi Tithi is starting from 1:59 pm on November 11 and this time will remain till 2:45 pm the next day on November 12. Chhoti Diwali will be celebrated on Saturday, November 11.
