The much-awaited Mumbai–Pune ‘Missing Link’ project is set to open to the public on May 1, marking Maharashtra Day. The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Mumbai and Pune, reducing travel time by nearly 25 minutes.

Constructed through the challenging terrain of the Sahyadri mountain range, the Missing Link project has been described as a major milestone in Maharashtra’s infrastructure development. The initiative focuses on enhancing safety, speed, and ease of travel along the busy Mumbai–Pune corridor.

Key Features of the Project

A major highlight of the project is its advanced tunnel system. Two primary tunnels have been constructed, measuring 8.92 km and 1.75 km respectively, with a combined tunnel length of approximately 12.3 km. These tunnels are equipped with modern safety features including sensors, CCTV surveillance, ventilation systems, and traffic management controls. Emergency fire exits have also been incorporated to ensure commuter safety.

Another engineering highlight is the cable-stayed bridge, spanning around 650 metres with towering pillars reaching 182 metres in height. Built to withstand high-speed winds, the bridge reduces the travel distance by nearly 6 kilometres, contributing to faster commute times.

Safety and Traffic Regulations

Authorities have implemented strict safety norms on this route. Vehicles carrying hazardous or flammable materials will not be permitted. Advanced traffic monitoring systems will be in place to ensure smooth vehicular movement and minimise accidents.

The new route will feature eight lanes in total—four on each side—allowing vehicles to travel at speeds of 80 to 100 kmph, ensuring a faster and more efficient journey.

Project Cost and Timeline

The Missing Link project has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹6,695 crore. Approved during 2017–18, construction began in 2019 and has now reached completion after years of engineering efforts.

The project is expected to make travel between Mumbai and Pune faster, safer, and more environmentally sustainable. Reduced travel time will lead to lower fuel consumption and decreased vehicular emissions.
