Another GBS Death in Pune: 37-Year-Old from Bibwewadi Dies, State Cases Soar
Pune, February 11, 2025: Maharashtra has reported another fatality due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), raising the state’s total death toll from the illness to seven.
A 37-year-old driver from Upper Indiranagar, Bibwewadi, succumbed to GBS at Kamala Nehru Hospital, Pune, on Sunday night (February 9). According to the Health Department, the total number of GBS cases in Maharashtra has reached 192, with Pune witnessing a significant surge.
Patient’s Medical Journey
The deceased first experienced weakness on January 31 and was initially taken to Bharti Hospital, Pune. His family later shifted him to Nipani for treatment on February 1, but as his condition worsened, he was moved to Bharti Hospital, Sangli. Despite intensive medical intervention, his health deteriorated further, leading to his transfer to Kamala Nehru Hospital, Pune, on February 5, where he passed away during treatment.
GBS Cases Across Maharashtra
So far, Maharashtra has recorded 192 cases of GBS, out of which 167 patients have been officially diagnosed. Pune district alone has seen a sharp rise in cases:
- 39 cases within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits
- 91 cases from newly merged villages
- 29 cases in Pimpri-Chinchwad
- 25 cases in rural Pune
- 8 cases from other districts
Current Hospitalization and Recovery Status
Among the affected patients:
- 48 are in intensive care units (ICU)
- 21 are on ventilator support
- 91 have recovered and been discharged
Age Groups Affected
GBS has impacted individuals across various age groups:
- 42 cases in the 20-29 age group
- 28 cases in the 50-59 age group
- Other cases include children, middle-aged individuals, and the elderly
Health Department’s Advisory
With the increasing number of cases, health officials have urged people to seek immediate medical attention if they experience sudden weakness, paralysis-like symptoms, or muscle fatigue. The Health Department is closely monitoring the situation to contain the spread and ensure timely treatment.
