Are train blankets washed regularly? RTI reveals worrying facts

Indian Railways’ bedding hygiene under scrutiny as RTI uncovers infrequent blanket cleaning practices, raising passenger concerns.
In a revelation that may disturb frequent train travelers, an RTI request has shed light on the washing schedule of bedding in Indian Railways’ AC coaches, sparking worries about cleanliness. The inquiry revealed that while bed sheets and pillowcases are washed after every use, blankets undergo a much less frequent cleaning regime.
AC passengers typically receive bedding, including sheets, pillows, and blankets, neatly packaged in brown envelopes at their seats. While the freshly laundered white sheets and pillowcases provide some reassurance, the blankets, however, remain a cause for concern regarding their hygiene.

According to the Railways’ response, blankets are laundered only once a month or occasionally twice, depending on their condition. This stands in stark contrast to the more regular washing of sheets and pillowcases. The cost of this bedding service is included in the ticket price, but passengers on select trains, such as the Garib Rath and Duronto, can opt for additional bedding services at an extra charge.
The RTI further disclosed that blankets, unlike sheets, are often just folded and stored back in the coaches after each trip unless they show visible signs of dirt or emit an unpleasant odor. The response also highlighted that Indian Railways operates 46 departmental laundries and 25 BOOT laundries across the country, with varying ownership and management structures.

What’s even more alarming is a 2017 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, which indicated that some blankets had gone unwashed for up to six months, adding to the concerns about passenger comfort and hygiene on long journeys.
