Attention Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm users: UPI will be disabled for these mobile numbers starting April 1

The way we make digital payments in India is about to change. Starting April 1st, there will be new rules for using UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. This change, announced by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), aims to make our financial transactions safer.

Here’s the key update: If your mobile number linked to your bank account hasn’t been used for UPI payments for a while, it will be removed. This means you’ll need to update your account with a currently active number to continue using UPI.

Why this change? The NPCI explained that inactive numbers can cause technical problems in the banking system and even open doors for fraud. If a number is reallocated to someone else, there’s a risk of payments being sent to the wrong person.

The bottom line is that having an active mobile number linked to your bank account is essential for using UPI. It’s like a digital key that ensures your money goes to the right place. So, make sure your number is up-to-date to avoid any disruptions in your digital payments.

If your bank account is linked to a mobile number that’s no longer active, you need to take action. Check with your phone company (like Jio, Airtel, Vi, or BSNL) to see if the number is still under your name. If it’s not, you should either reactivate it or update your bank account with a new number. The good news is that banks and UPI apps are already working on this. They’ll be updating their records weekly to remove inactive numbers, starting April 1st. So, make sure your details are current to avoid any payment issues.
