New Delhi, January 20, 2026: Indian badminton legend and Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal has officially brought an end to her professional playing career, citing long-standing knee injuries that have made competitive sport unsustainable for her.

Saina, who last competed on the international circuit at the Singapore Open in 2023, had stepped away from active play without making a public announcement at the time. She has now clarified that persistent physical limitations, caused by severe damage to her knee, left her unable to meet the demands of elite-level badminton.

Medical assessments revealed advanced cartilage degeneration and arthritis in her knee, conditions that ruled out intense training and regular competition. As a result, continuing at the highest level was no longer feasible, leading her to quietly move away from the sport over the past two years.

The former world number one first began facing knee-related issues during the 2016 Rio Olympics. Despite the setback, she displayed remarkable determination, returning to win a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships and a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. However, recurring injuries continued to hamper her progress and remained a constant challenge throughout the latter phase of her career.

In 2024, her condition worsened following a diagnosis of arthritis coupled with significant cartilage wear, further restricting her ability to train and compete. With limited mobility and reduced physical strength, Saina ultimately decided to step away from competitive badminton.

Widely regarded as one of India’s most influential sportspersons, Saina Nehwal’s career played a pivotal role in popularising badminton in the country and inspiring a new generation of players.
