Beach Visit Ends in Tragedy as Pune’s Man Drowns at Tarkarli
A tragic incident was reported at Tarkarli beach in Sindhudurg district after a young tourist from Pune went missing while swimming in the sea near the MTDC resort on Thursday evening.
The incident occurred around 4.30 pm when two tourists from Pune entered the sea for a swim near the Tarkarli MTDC beachfront. One of them was rescued by local residents, while the other was swept away by strong waves and remains missing.
The missing tourist has been identified as Samarth Ganesh Karpe (22), a resident of Ambegaon, Pune. His friend, Rishabh Ravikiran Kadam, survived the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at Malvan Rural Hospital.
According to available information, both youths were employed with a private company named Revati Enterprises in Pune and had travelled to Sindhudurg district on May 19 for official work related to the Social Welfare Department. After completing their work, they stayed back in Malvan for tourism.
On Thursday afternoon, the duo reportedly entered the sea near the MTDC resort at Tarkarli for swimming. However, they allegedly lost control after misjudging the water depth and the intensity of the waves, causing both to start drowning.
Hearing their cries for help, local residents immediately rushed into the sea to rescue them. Villagers managed to safely pull out Rishabh Kadam, but Samarth Karpe was reportedly dragged into deeper waters due to strong currents and went missing.
Local residents including Sanket Tari, Dattaraj Chavan, Vaibhav Khobrekar, Mahendra Chavan and Vaibhav Sawant played a crucial role in the rescue operation and helped save one of the tourists.
Rishabh, who suffered serious health complications after being rescued, was initially unable to receive immediate ambulance support despite calls being made to the 108 emergency service. Locals later transported him to Malvan Rural Hospital on a two-wheeler to avoid further delay.
In a heartbreaking detail emerging from the incident, officials said Rishabh had received a phone call from Samarth’s mother shortly before the incident. He reportedly handed the phone to Samarth, who briefly spoke with his mother before entering the sea. Moments later, the accident occurred.
Search operations are ongoing to trace the missing युवक.
