Beware of New Year e-Card and Auto-Call Scams: Tips to Stay Safe
As New Year celebrations approach, cybercriminals are deploying sophisticated scams disguised as festive greetings and offers. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself:
The Scams
Malicious New Year e-Cards:
Scammers send e-cards via WhatsApp, often containing APK files (unauthorised applications).
Once downloaded, these apps can give hackers control over your device, enabling them to monitor your activities, steal sensitive information, and even manipulate financial transactions.
WhatsApp Account Takeovers:
Hackers send malicious links or messages to gain control of your WhatsApp account.
Once access is gained, they may target your contacts for money or threaten to leak personal data.
Auto-Call Redirection Scams:
Victims receive automated calls with tempting offers and are asked to dial specific numbers.
Dialling these numbers redirects all calls and messages to the hackers, enabling them to steal OTPs and empty bank accounts.
How to Stay Safe
• Avoid Unknown APK Files: Never download or open APK files from unfamiliar numbers or sources.
• Install Antivirus Software: Use reputable antivirus software to detect and remove malicious apps.
• Be Cautious with Auto-Calls: Never dial numbers as instructed by auto-calls offering deals.
• Do Not Share Personal Information: Avoid sharing sensitive details over unsolicited calls or messages.
• Ignore False Offers: Legitimate offers are not shared via random calls, OTPs, or unknown numbers.
• Download Apps from Trusted Sources: Stick to official app stores like Google Play or the Apple App Store.
• Check App Reviews and Ratings: Verify app reliability before downloading by reading reviews and checking developer details.
Stay vigilant and spread awareness to help others avoid falling victim to these scams.
