The historic Bhimashankar Temple in Pune district will reopen for devotees from June 15, even as major infrastructure upgrades continue in phases to prepare for the expected surge in pilgrims during the 2027 Nashik Kumbh Mela.

Devotees will once again be able to visit the revered Bhimashankar Temple from June 15, with the district administration announcing the reopening after reviewing the progress of ongoing development works around the shrine.

Acting District Collector Gajanan Patil said the decision was taken considering the religious sentiments of devotees as well as preparations for the 2027 Nashik Kumbh Mela, which is expected to bring a significant increase in pilgrim footfall to the temple.

Authorities have been carrying out extensive infrastructure upgrades around the temple based on projected visitor numbers during the Kumbh period. A major congregation hall is currently under construction in front of the temple and is expected to be completed by the end of June.

Despite some work still being underway, officials noted that most of the remaining construction activity is located outside the core temple premises. As a result, the administration has decided to resume darshan facilities from June 15 without waiting for the entire project to be completed.

According to officials, all essential arrangements directly affecting devotees are expected to be ready before reopening. These include darshan management, cleanliness measures, basic amenities and traffic regulation systems. Any pending development work will continue in phases and will be carried out in a manner that does not disrupt temple visits.

To streamline crowd management and reduce congestion, the temple administration will introduce an online darshan registration system. The facility will become available from June 5 through the temple committee’s official website, allowing devotees to plan their visits in advance.

Bhimashankar, one of the twelve revered Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, attracts thousands of devotees every year. The reopening is expected to provide relief to pilgrims who have been waiting for regular access to the shrine while development works were being undertaken.

With improved infrastructure, better crowd management systems and upgraded facilities, authorities aim to ensure a smoother and safer pilgrimage experience ahead of the large influx of visitors expected in the coming years.
