BJP’s Strategic Moves Lead To Historic Victory In Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a resounding win in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, emerging as the single-largest party within the ruling Mahayuti alliance. The alliance, which includes the Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, dominated the polls with leads in over 232 of the state’s 288 seats, leaving the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) trailing with just 51 seats.

The BJP, set to win over 125 seats, credits its success to a blend of strategic initiatives, grassroots mobilization, and effective leadership. Here are the key factors behind its triumph:

1. Targeting Women Voters

The Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, launched by the Eknath Shinde government, directly appealed to women voters by offering financial aid of ₹1,500 per month to eligible women. The timely disbursement of funds just before Diwali appears to have swayed a significant segment of women voters, who turned out in large numbers—65.22% of the 47 million women voters cast their votes, with 15 constituencies seeing more women voters than men.

2. Effective Messaging

Slogans like “Ek hai toh safe hai” (Together we are safe) and “Batenge toh katenge” (Divided we fall), prominently used by BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, resonated with voters. These slogans emphasized unity, countering opposition narratives and consolidating Hindu and OBC support for the ruling alliance.

3. Grassroots Mobilization by RSS

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) played a pivotal role in energizing the BJP’s voter base. Following a setback in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, the RSS organized over 60,000 meetings and launched the Sajag Raho campaign to boost voter turnout. This grassroots effort contributed significantly to the BJP’s performance.

4. Leadership Choice of Eknath Shinde

The BJP’s decision to back Eknath Shinde as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister in 2022 proved strategic. Shinde, who led a rebellion against the Uddhav Thackeray government, positioned himself as a viable alternative to Thackeray. His Shiv Sena faction’s success, with leads in 56 seats, underscores the effectiveness of this decision.

5. The Modi Factor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s enduring popularity remained a cornerstone of the BJP’s campaign. Despite setbacks in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP’s appeal under Modi’s leadership continues to galvanize voters, solidifying his position as the party’s most influential leader.

The BJP’s decisive win in Maharashtra underscores the party’s ability to adapt its strategies to address voter concerns, mobilize its base effectively, and leverage leadership changes. This victory not only cements its position in the state but also sets the stage for its broader ambitions in the national political landscape.
