In a significant political shift ahead of the municipal elections, five former corporators of Shiv Sena (UBT) are set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today. The event will take place in Mumbai in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Muralidhar Mohol, and BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule. This development deals a major blow to Shiv Sena (UBT) in Pune.

The five corporators joining the BJP include two former male corporators and three female corporators: Vishal Dhanawade, Pallavi Javalge, Bala Oswal, Prachi Alhat, and Sangeeta Thosar. The defections are being attributed to dissatisfaction with the Shiv Sena (UBT) leadership and alleged neglect of Pune by senior party leaders.

According to sources, internal conflicts and lack of support from party leadership drove these corporators to switch allegiances. They claimed that party decisions did not prioritize Pune’s development, and leaders failed to provide necessary backing for local initiatives. Social media posts from the corporators last week hinted at their discontent, and shortly after, three of them were expelled from the party.

While BJP’s strength in Pune is expected to grow with these defections, it has sparked discontent among party loyalists. BJP insiders have voiced concerns over sidelining long-time party workers in favor of defectors.

This latest exodus follows ongoing struggles within Shiv Sena (UBT) since the split three years ago. Initially, eight corporators had chosen to remain loyal to Uddhav Thackeray’s faction, but internal rifts and leadership challenges have eroded that support. These developments highlight growing challenges for Shiv Sena (UBT) in maintaining its relevance in Pune’s political landscape.
