Mumbai Police on December 27 said the person who sent an email threatening to blow up the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) office has been arrested from Gujarat.

The arrested person’s identity had not been revealed when the initial reports surfaced. It is noteworthy that the threatening email was transmitted to the central bank on December 26. The accused asserted that a bomb had been planted at 11 different locations in Mumbai, encompassing the RBI office, as well as the premises of HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.

The email sender had demanded the resignation of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The mail, sent on Tuesday, claimed bombs were planted at eleven places in Mumbai. It provided three locations and all 11 bombs would explode serially if RBI governor Shaktikanta Das and union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman did not resign from their posts by 1.30 pm.

The alleged mastermind behind the emails, Mohammad Arshil Mohammad Iqbal Topala, 27, held a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree and was involved in share trading.

Police officials said Topala sent the emails for fun and to harass government officials; there was no other motive. He was arrested along with two accomplices – his brother-in-law Wasimraja Abdulrazzak Memon, 35, who ran a paan shop, and Memon’s friend Adilbhai Rafikbhai Malik, 23, who owned a small shop.

“The two other detainees are his accomplices who may have aided or abetted in the crime but have not admitted anything. We have handed over the accused to the MRA Marg police for further investigations,” said an officer. Prima facie, it appears that the three youths had sent the prank emails.

“We have planted 11 bombs at different locations in Mumbai. RBI, along with private sector banks, have executed the biggest scam in the history of India. This scam involves RBI governor Shaktikanta Das, finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman, some top banking officials and some renowned ministers of India. We have sufficient solid proof for the same. The bombs have been placed at the New Central Office Building, Fort; HDFC Bank, Churchgate; and ICICI Bank Towers, BKC. These bombs will explode exactly at 1.30 pm,” read the threat email

Topala created a Gmail account – [email protected] – from his mobile phone using the sim card procured by Malik.
