In a symbolic move against Pakistan, sweet shop owners in Jaipur have started removing the word ‘Pak’ from the names of popular sweets, receiving strong public support.

Amid rising anti-Pakistan sentiment following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and India’s successful Operation Sindoor, sweet shop owners in Jaipur have taken a unique stand: they are renaming traditional Indian sweets that contain the word “Pak.” A well-known shop, Mumbai Mishthan Bhandar located in the Sanganeri Gate area of the city, led the initiative under the guidance of Mehul Agarwal, a local organizational leader.

The decision stems from growing public anger over Pakistan’s repeated involvement in cross-border terrorism. The term “Pak” in the names of many sweets such as Anjeer Pak, Gond Pak, Mysore Pak, Mawa Pak, and Fruit Pak originally refers to the traditional cooking process used in their preparation. However, the overlap with the name of the neighbouring country, Pakistan, has triggered discomfort for many customers in the current climate.

Vineet Trikha, General Manager of Mumbai Mishthan Bhandar, explained that the renaming was a symbolic response to Pakistan’s hostile acts and a way to send a message that anything associated with the country will not be tolerated. “The idea is to ensure that even in small ways, we show solidarity and remind everyone that we will not spare anyone who raises their eyes towards India,” he said.

As part of the change, Gond Pak has become Gond Shri, Mysore Pak is now Mysore Shri, Anjeer Pak has been renamed Anjeer Bharat, and Fruit Pak has turned into Fruit Special. Many other sweets with the word “Pak” are also undergoing similar changes, replacing it with terms like “Bharat” or “Shri.”

The move has been well received by Jaipur’s residents, known for their love of sweets. Customers have praised the shop owners’ stand and some have even pledged not to buy sweets that still carry the old names. The trend is expected to influence sweet shops in other parts of the country, as local businesses express patriotism in their own unique ways.
