BRTS Struggles: Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Face Infrastructure Crisis

Renowned activist Rupesh Kesekar has raised alarm over the deteriorating state of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, citing mismanagement and neglect. Despite Pune’s pioneering role in introducing BRTS, Kesekar highlights a stark contrast with other cities where the system operates smoothly. Presently, the BRTS, spanning eight corridors, suffers from neglect in maintenance, infrastructure, and passenger safety.

The civic bodies of both cities, responsible for BRTS management, have invested significant sums into the system’s construction. However, the absence of adequate maintenance, exacerbated by budget constraints, has led to the degradation of infrastructure and a surge in security concerns. Passenger amenities, once modern and well-equipped, have fallen prey to theft and vandalism, leaving commuters inconvenienced and unsafe.

With over half a million passengers utilizing the PMPML buses daily via the BRTS, the need for immediate action is evident. Yet, despite generating substantial revenue, the quality of service provided remains inadequate. Kesekar emphasizes the urgency of reinstating security measures, improving lighting, and deploying surveillance technology to safeguard passengers and infrastructure.

In response, Anant Waghmare, BRTS manager at PMPML, acknowledges ongoing maintenance efforts but points to the collaboration needed with PMC’s electrical department for resolving electrical issues. Despite budget allocations for maintenance in the upcoming fiscal year, concerns persist over the lack of provision for security personnel.

Waghmare underscores the myriad benefits of BRTS, including cost-effectiveness, punctuality, and reduced congestion, emphasizing its necessity for Pune’s transportation ecosystem. However, without immediate intervention to address the current crisis, the viability and safety of the BRTS system in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad remain precarious.
