Pune, October 21, 2024: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjay Chandrachud revealed that he had turned to prayer during the critical moments of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, seeking divine guidance for a solution. Speaking on Sunday at a felicitation ceremony in his native village of Kanhersar in Pune’s Khed tehsil, Chandrachud shared his experience from the time the case was presented before the Supreme Court in 2019.

The CJI recounted the immense pressure felt by the five-judge bench, which included Justices Ranjan Gogoi, SA Bobde, Ashok Bhushan, SA Nazeer, and himself, as they deliberated the historic and highly sensitive case. “For three months, we were unsure of how to move forward. I have always been a person of faith, and during that time, I prayed to God, asking Him to find a solution to this complex issue,” said Chandrachud, who is set to retire on November 10.

The Supreme Court’s ruling on November 9, 2019, brought an end to decades of legal and communal conflict, paving the way for the construction of the Ram temple at the disputed Ayodhya site. The judgment also allocated an alternative five-acre plot within Ayodhya for the construction of a mosque, ensuring a resolution for all parties involved.

During his address, Chandrachud emphasized his belief in the power of faith, saying, “If you have faith, God will always find a way.” He expressed the sentiment that many legal matters can seem intractable, but sometimes solutions emerge from unexpected places.

CJI Chandrachud also mentioned his personal connection to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, having visited the site earlier this year in July, where he offered prayers. The temple’s idol consecration ceremony, held on January 22, 2024, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a related event, Prime Minister Modi had visited the CJI’s residence in September for Ganesh Pooja, which attracted criticism from opposition parties, questioning the propriety of such a visit amid the separation of powers between the judiciary and the executive. However, Chandrachud refrained from addressing the political implications during his speech in Kanhersar.

The Ayodhya verdict remains one of the most significant legal milestones in India’s judicial history, resolving a dispute that spanned more than a century. As the CJI prepares for retirement, his reflections on this case continue to resonate with both the legal community and the nation.
