Coldplay Announces Retirement Plans Amid Controversy Over Black Market Concert Tickets in India
The band confirms their retirement after the 12th album as ticketing controversies plague their upcoming Mumbai concerts.
As excitement builds for Coldplay’s much-anticipated return to Mumbai in January 2025, the British rock band has announced they will retire after releasing their 12th studio album. Frontman Chris Martin confirmed the news in a recent interview, explaining that the band is ready to explore new personal opportunities outside of music. Coldplay, currently with nine albums under their belt, is gearing up to release their 10th album, Moon Music, on October 4, 2024.
During a conversation with Apple Music 1, Martin stated, “We’re only going to do 12 proper albums, and that’s real. Having that limit ensures the quality is higher than ever. It’s become harder for a song to make the cut, and that’s a good thing.” He humorously added, “For some critics, even less would be more!” Martin emphasized that the decision to cap the number of albums reflects the band’s desire for continuous improvement, rather than coasting on their success.
The announcement coincides with mounting controversy over Coldplay’s upcoming concerts in Mumbai. Originally scheduled for two performances on January 18 and 19, 2025, a third date on January 21 was added due to overwhelming demand. However, the frenzy over ticket sales quickly led to disappointment for many fans, as tickets sold out within minutes, and soon began appearing on the black market at inflated prices.
In response, Mumbai Police have launched an investigation into a potential ticketing scam involving online platform BookMyShow. CEO Ashish Hemrajani and the company’s technical head were summoned by the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) following complaints of fake ticket sales. Although Hemrajani did not attend the initial inquiry, the police have reissued the summons, further fueling speculation that the concert could be at risk of cancellation.
Despite the ongoing ticketing issues, excitement remains high for Coldplay’s return to India, marking their first performance in the country in eight years. Fans can look forward to hearing iconic hits like Yellow and Sky Full of Stars as the Grammy-winning band takes the stage at Mumbai’s D.Y. Patil Sports Stadium.
