Researchers found that reducing UPF intake led to an average weight loss of nearly 3.5 kg over eight weeks, with participants consuming 600 fewer calories per day.

Key Findings

The study, which focused on the American diet, has global relevance due to rising obesity rates worldwide. UPFs are industrial formulations containing minimal whole foods and are often made using additives, dyes, and preservatives. Common examples include packaged snacks, frozen meals, sodas, and breakfast cereals.

“Participants in the study who reduced their UPF consumption saw a striking drop in daily calorie intake and achieved notable weight loss, even without specific weight loss counseling,” the research team noted. The weight loss observed was comparable to that seen in traditional behavioral weight loss programs, which typically target a reduction of 0.5–1 kg per week.

Healthy Alternatives to Ultra-Processed Foods
