The farmers impacted by the Pavana dam project have chosen to go on an indefinite strike starting on Monday, December 11 in protest of their long-standing demands for government jobs and rehabilitation for one affected family member.

Additionally, the Pavana Dharangrasta Kruti Samiti (PDKS) group has threatened to cut off Pimpri-Chinchwad’s water supply from the Pavana Dam.

The district administration has held multiple meetings, but has never offered to resolve the long-standing problem. The Friday meeting between the Pune district deputy collector, Ajay More, and the members of the PDKS is rescheduled for Monday.

Nevertheless, the farmers have made the decision to strike, and the district administration will hold a meeting during the demonstration if necessary.

Pavana dam was constructed in 1972 due to which approximately 5,926 acres of land had been acquired, affecting 19 villages in total. The affected farmers claimed that in addition to their rehabilitation, the administration had promised one of their family members a position in the government.
