466-km expressway to cut travel time from 12 hours to 6 by 2026; cost doubles as project finally enters final stage

The construction of Maharashtra’s largest highway, the Mumbai–Goa highway, which had been stalled for 14 years, is now in its final stage and is expected to be fully operational by March 2026. Work on this crucial project began in 2011 but faced repeated delays due to land acquisition issues, administrative hurdles and contractor-related lapses.

Stretching 466 kilometres from Panvel in Mumbai to Sindhudurg, the highway passes through Raigad and Ratnagiri districts, connecting several towns and villages of the Konkan region. Once completed, the travel time from Mumbai to Goa will reduce from the current 12–13 hours to just six hours, significantly boosting road connectivity, tourism and trade.

Initially pegged at a cost of ₹3,500 crore, the project’s budget has nearly doubled to ₹7,300 crore due to delays and rising material and construction costs. In contrast, the Navi Mumbai International Airport — another major infrastructure project was built in just four years, though its operations are yet to commence.

Officials say more than 95% of the highway construction is complete, with various stretches reporting progress between 92% and 99%. The remaining work includes finishing touches, installation of safety infrastructure and toll management systems.

Modern Toll Collection System

A standout feature of the upgraded Mumbai–Goa highway is its advanced toll collection setup. Using satellite-based tracking and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), vehicles will be able to pass through toll plazas without stopping. This system is expected to reduce congestion, save fuel and offer a smoother travel experience.

Economic and Social Impact

The highway is set to transform the Konkan region by improving access to remote areas, creating employment opportunities and boosting hospitality, tourism and logistics sectors. Better road infrastructure is also expected to improve safety for daily commuters and long-distance travellers.
