Pune: Member of Parliament Girish Bapat passed away yesterday, March 29 morning due to a prolonged illness. Bapat, a senior politician and Member of Parliament from Pune had a long and eventful career in Indian politics. Born on September 3, 1950, in Talegaon Dabhade, Bapat received his primary education in his hometown before moving to New English School Ramanbagh for his secondary education. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce.

Bapat began his professional career in 1973 when he joined Telco as a worker. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was imprisoned for 19 months during the Emergency in India, spending time in Nashik Jail. Despite this setback, Bapat continued to work hard and took on various responsibilities within the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Jan Sangh, and Parivar organizations.

In 1983, Bapat entered the political arena and was elected as a corporator in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). He continued to serve as a corporator for three consecutive terms and even became the Chairman of the Standing Committee in the PMC despite lacking the power to do so.

Bapat’s political career continued to soar as he was elected as an MLA from Kasba Constituency for five consecutive terms. He also served as a Cabinet Minister in Devendra Fadnavis’ Cabinet. Finally, in 2019, Bapat was elected as the MP from Pune.

Throughout his career, Bapat has been a tireless advocate for the people of Pune and Maharashtra. He has worked hard to improve the lives of his constituents.
