Growing Pigeon Problem In Pune: Citizens Urged To Act For Better Public Health
Pune: The Erandwane Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal organized a unique awareness drive on Monday to address the health risks associated with feeding pigeons in public areas. The campaign took place near the Shri Ashtabhuja Durga Mata Temple along the riverbed road near Baba Bhide Bridge, where large flocks of pigeons gather daily.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mandal members respectfully requested individuals feeding grains to pigeons to stop the practice for the sake of public health. Many participants pledged to discontinue feeding pigeons, acknowledging its adverse impact on the city’s environment and public health.
Speaking on the occasion, Mandal President Prashant Velankar explained the seriousness of the issue. “Pigeon droppings are spreading harmful pathogens, leading to respiratory illnesses among citizens. Despite Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) ban on feeding pigeons in public places, enforcement has been inadequate. The PMC must take immediate steps to install warning boards and penalize offenders,” Velankar stated.
The Mandal highlighted a worrying trend in Pune, where pigeons have started feeding on ritual offerings meant for crows during funerary rites. This shift underscores the overpopulation of pigeons in urban areas.
Prominent members present included Mandal Vice President Kishori Kachare, Secretary Himali Sadekar, Treasurer Suresh Nimbalkar, and Festival Committee Head Raju Motiwale, along with other active volunteers.
The Mandal reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness about the public health hazards of feeding pigeons and urged the PMC to implement stricter measures.
