Heavy Rain to Continue in Maharashtra: Konkan, Ghats on Alert as Monsoon Intensifies

Mumbai, June 20 – Maharashtra is bracing for another spell of intense rainfall over the next five days as the southwest monsoon continues to gain strength. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for multiple districts, particularly along the Konkan coast and the Western Ghats, where heavy to very heavy showers are expected.

While the coastal and ghat regions are on high alert, rainfall activity remains moderate to low in Marathwada and Vidarbha. However, several districts have already recorded sharp surges in rainfall, with rising river levels and fast-filling reservoirs signaling the need for preparedness.

Widespread Showers Across Western Maharashtra

According to the IMD, favorable atmospheric conditions are supporting the northward advance of the monsoon into central and northern parts of India. A stable trough line from North Konkan to North Kerala is contributing to the sustained downpour along the western coast.

Yellow alerts have been issued for the Konkan region, including districts like Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The ghats of Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, and Nashik are also expected to experience heavy rainfall, raising concerns of waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides.

Central Maharashtra, Mumbai See Moderate Showers

In central Maharashtra, including Ahmednagar and Solapur, light to moderate rain is forecast. While this may bring temporary relief from heat, isolated areas could still face flooding due to poor drainage.

Mumbai will see mostly cloudy skies with intermittent moderate rainfall. While no severe alert has been issued for the city, the IMD warns of potential traffic delays and waterlogging in low-lying suburbs.

Barvi Dam Levels Rise Sharply

On a positive note, the Barvi Dam in Thane district has shown a significant improvement in water levels. It currently stands at 43% capacity, up from 25% on the same date last year. With nearly 790 mm of rainfall in its catchment area so far, officials are optimistic that the dam could reach full capacity earlier than usual, ensuring water security for nearby towns and industrial hubs including Thane, Badlapur, Ambernath, and Kalyan-Dombivli.

Citizens Urged to Stay Alert

As the monsoon strengthens across Maharashtra, authorities are urging residents to remain cautious—especially in landslide-prone areas and flood-sensitive zones. Travelers are advised to check weather updates before heading to the ghats or coastal regions.

People should stay connected with official bulletins, avoid venturing near overflowing rivers or flooded roads, and ensure that safety measures are in place at home and in transit.

The coming days are expected to be wet, with changing weather patterns demanding both community awareness and administrative preparedness.
