Heavy Rains Cause Crop Damage, Leading to Price Surge in Fruits and Vegetables.
Pune: September 27, 2024.
Intense rainfall has caused significant damage to crops throughout the district, leading to a 10-15 percent rise in the prices of fruits and vegetables at Market Yard on Thursday. Mahesh Hande Deshmukh, a member of the Market Yard Traders’ Association and a vegetable trader, mentioned that while the market typically sees 1,200-1,500 trucks loaded with vegetables each day, only 1,000 trucks arrived on Thursday due to farmers reporting crop damage from the heavy rains.
A fruit trader at Market Yard, added that the supply shortage over the past few days has resulted in a price increase of about 10 to 15 percent in the wholesale market for fruits and vegetables, which will also affect retail prices in the coming days.
Recent heavy rains have been noted in areas such as Alandi, Pimpalgaon, Wada, Rajgurunagar, Kude, Pait, Chakan, Kanhersar, Kadus, Bhosari, and Haveli. Farmer Kiran Mankar expressed concern for many farmers in Velha taluka, stating that they are anxious about potential further crop damage, with losses from their tomato crops amounting to around â‚ą1 lakh due to the rains.
