High Tide Claims Lives of Senior Couple from Mumbai at Goa’s Candolim Beach
Rough sea conditions and high tides during the monsoon season led to a tragic incident at Goa’s Candolim Beach, claiming the lives of a senior couple from Mumbai.
A senior citizen couple from Mumbai drowned at Goa’s Candolim Beach on Friday morning as high waves swept them away during a stroll.
Goa police reported the incident occurred around 11 am. Four people, part of a group of 14 visiting Goa had decided to go for a morning walk along the beach. Superintendent of Police stated that three out of the four individuals were caught by the waves. Locals at the scene managed to rescue one woman, identified as 68-year-old Kalpana Parekh, who is currently receiving treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital. However, the bodies of Prakash Doshi, 73, and Harshita Doshi, 69, residents of Matunga in Mumbai, were recovered from the sea.
Goa’s beaches are closed for swimming during the monsoon due to hazardous sea conditions. The lifeguarding agency has issued warnings against swimming, citing dangerous rip currents, high tides, and strong winds, which make the sea extremely perilous.
The west coast of India, from Phalghar in Maharashtra to Udupi in Karnataka, is under a severe high tide alert, with waves expected to reach heights of 4-4.3 meters. The monsoon season, which typically lasts from June to September, brings increased rainfall, rough seas, and unpredictable weather, making coastal activities particularly risky.
An advisory has been issued urging visitors to avoid rocky areas, cliffs and hills along the shoreline due to their slippery surfaces during the monsoon. The increased wave height, intensity and frequency significantly raise the risk of beachgoers being swept into turbulent waters.
